This Sunday is the first week of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation. By preparation, I am not thinking about decorating our homes, or buying Christmas presents – though those preparations help us celebrate Christmas. Rather, I am talking about the preparations we make to welcome the coming of Jesus into our hearts. I hope that we are as intentional about “letting every heart prepare him room”.
What might be ways to make room in our hearts for Him?
Read one of the Gospels during the season of Advent and seek to discover something new, or place yourself in the story.
Re-connect with an old friend
Take the money you would spend going out to eat, and give that money to a food bank
Visit someone who can’t get out of the house easily and invite them to lunch or coffee.
In addition to sending out cards to people on your mailing list, pray for each person on the list during Advent.
Focus more on spending time with people, rather than spending money.
In the busyness and noise of the season, find time each day to meditate, pray, or reflect in silence.
These are some ways that can feed our souls and help to avoid holiday burn-out.
This Sunday we will also receive Holy Communion at all 3 services; and will recognize Dan Lees’ achievement of becoming a Certified Lay Speaker.
I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday. The Advent season is often a time when people who do not have a church home are more open to attending a church. The most effective way for new people to come to church, is if someone invites them. Thank you for the many ways you show hospitality and help Buckhall UMC be a welcoming place.
Yours in Christ,
PS – Join us for fun and revelry.
